Prop Ideas For Your Birthday Photoshoot

As a photographer, I am often asked what should I bring for my birthday photoshoot? So I created a short list of things you can bring for your birthday photoshoot that could help bring your photos to life.

What Props You Could Bring To Your Birthday Photoshoot?

Below is a list of potential props you can bring to your photoshoot. I have linked each item to amazon so you can see an example or simply make a purchase.

  1. Balloons

Nothing says birthday that big number balloons and balloons in general. The best part of having balloons in your photoshoot is you get to select the colors to match your birthday theme or outfit.

  2. Cupcake/Cake

Now cakes and cupcakes are a given. As a photographer I always recommend getting a cupcake because depending on when you want to add them into your shoot they are small and easy to use in different shots. For example you can get an image of you holding up your cupcake or blowing our the candle on your cake.

  3. Candles

If you bring a cupcake/cake to your birthday photoshoot you will need the candles too. You can add these to your cake however you see fit, its your day so its up to you. If you want one candle so you can blow it out that would work or if you would like your age on your candle you can do that to.

  4. Crown

Now you don’t need a crown per say for your photoshoot but what’s a Queen without her crown. So grab that crown and show it off during your photoshoot. this adds such a different depth of poses to your photoshoot because you can draw attention to your crown by holding it.

  5. Mini Confetti Popper

What’s a birthday photoshoot without a little confetti. Confetti is great because when used right it makes your photos more playful and fun. If you decide to use confetti for your birthday photoshoot I definitely recommend bring at least 4 confetti poppers and 2 people with you.

  6. Gift Bags/Gift

Who doesn’t like to receive gifts on their birthday? I know I love getting gifts on my special day, so I always encourage my clients to bring gift bags and boxes to their birthday session. These bags and boxes don’t need to have anything in them, they could be stuffed with paper or an empty cardboard box wrapped in gift wrap.

Why Should You Bring Props To Your Birthday Photoshoot?
When you are getting your photos taken by your photographer for your birthday, you don’t just want the basic photos where you are just standing in front of a backdrop. It’s your special day, you are looking to make a statement and have photos that pop. For that reason adding props adds an extra flare to your photos. While you are taking your photos you can add your props in which will make your photos look better. For example, adding gift bags and balloons in the background will make your photos a little different from just having a plain color behind you.

Extras To Help You Prepare For Your Birthday Photoshoot?

  1. Hair & Make Up
For your birthday photoshoot, you should get styles that you know you like and you have tried before. I not recommend trying something too new just in case you don’t like it. Lastly, unless you have been doing your own hair and makeup for a while you should book a professional to help you get these done.

  2. Bring Extra Bloating Tissue or Napkin
During your photoshoot you might get hot and having a extra bloating tissue or napkin will ensure you don’t look oily during your photoshoot.

  3. Bring A Extra Brush or Comb

During your birthday session you will be moving around and changing outfits so your hair might start getting frizzy or we start seeing flyaways. So having a brush or comb with you could help make sure your hair looks flawless.

  4. Bring A Friend or 2
I recommend you bring a friend or family members to your photoshoot to hype you up and help with setting up some of your shots. You want your photos to look great and having someone hyping you up will make you look amazing in your photos. Plus your friend/family typically will know how to make you laugh, how to get that genuine smile out of you, and they will make sure you look your best.
