Have you thought about starting a photography business and didn’t know where to start? If yes, you are in the right place. Below you will find the basics you will need to start and at the end of the article I give you a tip to getting your first client. But, before we begin, I would like to mention just like starting any business starting a photography business is not easy and will require hard-work. Okay let’s dive in to what you will need to start your photography business!

Tips For Starting Your Photography Business

You Should Start With the Kit Package

Also when you are starting the kit packages are great because you get more bang for your buck. An added bonus is if you do decide to upgrade camera bodies most kit lenses will attach to your new camera body.

Avoid This Camera Buying Trap

The trap many new and even professional photographers fall into is buying all the new and latest gear for their business. I too was caught by this trap so I can help you narrow down the basics you will need in order to start without breaking the bank because camera equipment is expensive.

Getting Your First Clients

Before you get your very first client, I recommend practicing with your camera and equipment till you are comfortable enough with your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings. Once you are comfortable, tell your friends, family, coworkers, everyone you know that you are offering them a free or discounted session. Once you get these sessions done you now have a mini portfolio to share with new clients, add to your website, and social media accounts.

What type of camera should you get?

Most people when starting will try and get the professional DSLR or Mirrorless camera. But, to begin I recommend getting a medium tier DSLR or Mirrorless camera. The reason I say you should start with a medium tier camera when starting your business is:

  • Affordable

  • Easy to learn

  • Great video quality
