3 Poses To Try At Your Photoshoot

Before every session, without fail, my clients always state they don’t know how to pose. My response is always, “Don’t worry, I got you!”. Most people are visual learners and to help them feel more comfortable, I send my clients a vision board detailing the concepts of the shoot, from poses to wardrobe and prop suggestion.

Of all the hundreds of poses and techniques that are out there, I have learned that these three below will always turnout an excellent image.

This portrait is of business owner, Ashley Coleman, posing with her left arm behind her head and an over the shoulder pose. This image was taken in Downtown, Dallas, Texas.

1.     Over the shoulder

What I love about this pose is that it can be done sitting or standing. You’ll start off by pointing one of your shoulders towards the camera and turn your head, so you are looking over that shoulder. To add a variation to this pose put the hand furthest from the camera on the shoulder that you have pointed to the camera. Not only does this pose accentuate the curves of the body, but it also allows you an opportunity to show off the designs or details on the back of your clothes.

2.     Create a Triangle

This pose takes a little more thought but when done properly it creates a dynamic photo. Remember, the key to this pose is arm placement and following the point of your elbow. By placing your hands on your hips in the superhero pose, you naturally create a triangle from the way your elbow bends. Doing this pose creates natural leading lines which help focus the viewers eyes where you want it.

3.     Your clothes are your props

Grab your glasses, play with your hair, or fix a button on your shirt. These create the most dynamic and natural looking photos because 90% of the time we will already be doing these things.

Remember to have fun with it! Sometimes we take ourselves too seriously and the best photos are the ones where we aren’t trying.
